Here are a some tips for optimum tattoo aftercare:
1. Remove bandage after two hours. Start to wash your tattoo 4-5 times per day with an unscented antibacterial soap. Use clean hands to wash the tattoo. Do not scrub with a rag or any other cleaning device. Use cool to light warm water depending on your pain level. Do not use hot water to clean your fresh tattoo.
2. After your tattoo has been washed, place a thin layer of bacitracin ointment (or similar product) and rub it into the tattoo. The ointment should only be used for the first 4-5 days. The ointment will act as a protective barrier for your tattoo and defend your new tattoo against bacteria getting inside the wound. After 4-5 days switch to an unscented lotion. Continuing to use an ointment beyond the 4-5 day period can lead to adverse side effects.
3. Continue to keep your tattoo moisturized to help your body regrow the skin cells that were damaged during the tattoo application process. It takes water to replace the cells and the moisturizer provides that for your body to speed up the healing process. Drinking the proper amount of water and staying hydrated also helps to heal your tattoo.
4. Do not over soak your tattoo in a pool, hot tub or by any other means.
5. Do not let your tattoo get a hard scab. A hard scab on a tattoo can cause the tattoo to heal improperly and create light spots in the ink that will fall out with the scab. A hard scab can also create an opening for additional healing time and increase the chances of infection. A hard scab is the enemy of your tattoo healing process.
6. Following these tips will help your tattoo to heal very quickly. Healing time is different for everyone based on their own levels of health.

No. You are not required to tip your tattoo artist. With that being said just remember that in most cases your tattoo artist is not paid the total that you are charged for your tattoo. The artist only receives a percentage of the amount charged. So any tip that you give your artist just lets them know that you appreciate the quality of the tattoo and enjoyed the experience of your time spent at the shop. If you decide to tip, follow standard tipping practices to determine the tip amount. It is strictly up to you decide if you would like to tip or not. The artist has been paid an agreed amount for the tattoo design and will not ask for or demand a tip.
Yes. Appointments are the best way to ensure that you will get your tattoo at the time you want it. There is a required deposit of $100. This deposit amount will guarantee your time and is counted towards the total cost of your tattoo. However, if you miss your appointment time your deposit will be forfeited. The tattoo artist has already spent time working to have your artwork ready and deserves to be paid for that time. If you need to reschedule your appointment time, it is polite to do so at least a week in advance. This gives the artist enough time to shift and fill the empty time slot. If you cannot reschedule a week in advance, then at least a 24 hour notice is required for you to not loose your deposit. All deposits are non-refundable so it is a good practice to keep your appointment or reschedule in a timely manner.
In most cases no, absolutely not. Professional artists obtain a tattoo license from the state and work in a tattoo shop environment. Outside of that environment you run the increased risk of infection, cross contamination and poor quality tattoo artwork. Some tattooists cannot even draw and are not good enough to work in a real tattoo shop. Unlicensed tattooists are unlicensed for a reason. They are usually not trained in safety precautions and many aspects of tattoo procedures. In the end, the decision is yours to expose your health and sacrifice the quality of work you receive if you decide to obtain a tattoo from an unlicensed tattooist outside of a tattoo shop. At tattoo shops we often see the results of such tattooists when a customer comes to our shop and asks us to fix or cover up their scarred up skin and poor quality tattoos. We do take before pictures to document the poor quality work performed by such "Tattoo Artists".
